Competition Overview

The FA Cup was first played during the 1871–72 season, making it the oldest national football competition1. Organized by and named after The Football Association (The FA), it has been held annually since its inception, except for interruptions during the World Wars. Initially, the FA Cup included Scottish and Welsh clubs. In 1927, Cardiff City, a Welsh club, won the Cup, while no Scottish clubs have claimed victory in the tournament. The FA Cup is a knockout competition open to all eligible clubs down to Level 9 of the English football league system. The tournament consists of 12 randomly drawn rounds, followed by the semi-finals and the final. The last entrants are the 20 Premier League and 24 Championship clubs, who join the draw for the third round proper The FA Cup celebrates giant-killing victories, focusing on smaller teams that progress furthest.While non-League teams have reached the quarter-finals, no team below Level 2 has ever reached the final..
