Southampton Football Club, commonly known as Southampton FC or simply Saints, is a professional soccer club based in Southampton, England. The club was founded in 1885 and has a rich history in English football. Southampton has played the majority of its home matches at St Mary's Stadium since 2001, which has a seating capacity of over 32,000. The club has had several notable accomplishments throughout its history. Southampton has won the FA Cup once, in 1976, defeating Manchester United in the final. They have also been runners-up in the League Cup on one occasion, in 1979. Southampton has had success in the lower divisions as well, winning the Football League Trophy twice. The club's nickname, "The Saints," is derived from the city's association with the church and its patron saint, St. Mary. Southampton FC has a strong fan base and enjoys a fierce rivalry with Portsmouth FC, known as the South Coast Derby.
